Positivity in A Dark Age

July 1, 2017

The world of Hollywood can be filled with negativity and drama, but there are still celebrities who are doing wonderful things to make a better world around them. From environmental activism to rescuing animals, here are a few celebrities who are worth looking up to.

Leonardo DiCaprio

DiCaprio established his foundation named after himself in 1998, with the mission to protect the last wild places in the world. His organization works tirelessly to ensure the long term success of the environment and he has even become a major spokesperson for some of the most controversial environmental issues. DiCaprio’s foundation believes in four core areas of focus including protecting wildlife, saving the oceans, restoring wildlands and empowering communities. Recently DiCaprio made a documentary titled “Before the Flood” where the actor met with scientists, world leaders and activists to discuss the effects of climate change and the possible solutions.

Jennifer Lawrence

Lawrence has been known to work with many of the same foundations as her coworkers, like The Thirst Project which is a growing movement aimed at building freshwater wells in communities suffering from the global water crisis and Feeding America which focuses on distributing food and grocery products to the nation's hungry. While she does charity work, one of the things that Lawrence does that sets her apart from her colleagues is her ability to speak her mind and not care of the implications. Lawrence opened up in 2015 with a letter asking the question "Why Do I Make Less Than My Male Co‑Stars?" This letter spoke to young women around the country and brought light to the gender wage gap and its affect on hollywood stars that many didn’t think about when discussing the topic.

Ian Somerhalder

Somerhalder may be known for being the bad guy in Vampire Diaries, but he is far from his character’s personality in real life. According to his foundation site, “After witnessing the devastation of Hurricane Katrina and the horrible aftermath of the Gulf Oil Spill just five years later, Ian was overcome by a feeling of helplessness. He was inspired to take action and so, The Ian Somerhalder Foundation was established in November 2010.” Through this foundation, he has promoted educating the world on how to preserve the environment and wildlife.

Oprah Winfrey

When I think of a kindhearted celebrity, the first person that always comes to mind is Oprah Winfrey. Winfrey is known for being charitable and has donated millions of dollars to numerous organizations. The three foundations that the majority of her money goes to are the Angel Network, Oprah Winfrey Foundation and the Oprah Winfrey Operating Foundation. Winfrey supports a number of causes: fighting climate change, HIV, AIDS, Ovarian cancer treatment and she is one of the largest contributors to Free The Children, an organization dedicated to building schools for children in developing countries just to name a few. Winfrey, after coming from a rough childhood sets a great example for young women around the world that they can achieve anything with hard work, dedication and kindness.

There’s a lot of negativity in today’s day and age, but these stars are shining brighter than the darkness that clouds up around Hollywood. With their philanthropic lifestyles and need to do good in the world these people are helping shape today's generation into better people. If you’d like to learn more about how you can be involved in your community like the people above, look for charities or organizations in your area or visit dosomething.org and find a cause you’re passionate about!

Hi! I'm Kelly Broderick and I am 20 years old. I'm currently a senior studying sports journalism and I'm on the broadcast route so I hope to one day be in front of the screen. I love writing and hope that if I don't make it on a network, that I can write for either a newspaper or magazine. My heart lies with sports, but I also have a passion for music and traveling as well! An interesting thing to know about me is that I was born on Christmas!
