I hadn’t been aware of the upcoming pop icon Dua Lipa until the past month, when Lorde tweeted about Lipa’s new music video for her song New Rules. I became hooked immediately on the music video—with its close-to-home lyrics and catchy beat—and proceeded to listen to the entire album. From the first to the last track on the self-titled album, each song hits hard to anyone who’s been in—and out—of a relationship or had to deal with a flaky boy. From lyrics like “don’t pick up the phone you know he’s only calling cause he’s drunk and alone” to “in the beginning God created Heaven and Earth for what it’s worth think that he might’ve created you first.”

Only 21 years old from London, England, Lipa has been through enough to make relatable songs for all. Like many young stars these days, her career began on YouTube—proving the power of the internet once again. Of Albanian descent, Lipa contributed to every song on her album, a feat that is not as common as some might think in the modern entertainment industry. She has collaborated with the likes of Sean Paul and Martin Garrix.
Despite her success, it is evident that Lipa has kept a level head throughout her career in interviews and radio shows. Her voice almost sounds better live than it does on studio recordings, an alluring trait for a singer these days. In my opinion, it is her lyrics that steal that show. Not only does she write her own music, but it is poetic and truly relatable. For those of us who have been through a breakup or had a hard time in a relationship, there is surely a Dua Lipa song that you can find to fit your situation.
Her touching sentiments and melodic remedies soothe the soul and are the perfect treatment for any breakup or simply any times you’re feeling down and need to know that someone understands you. Believe me: she does. Dua Lipa wrote the breakup song you need right now.
My name is Meagan Donovan and I’m a 19 year old junior at Chapman University in Southern California. I am double majoring in theater studies and public relations/advertising, emphasizing my studies in the entertainment industry. A fun fact about me is that I’ve been performing since I was in third grade and I love writing my own songs, playing guitar, learning new dance forms, and acting in plays and musicals.
