If you had told me even a year ago that I was going to run any sort of race I would’ve laughed. In just a week, I will be running a 5k for Make-a-Wish Greater Bay Area and in less than a month I will be running a 10k in Disneyland. I originally signed up for these races because I was trying to be more fit. I knew that I wanted to be more active and knowing that I had to run a race would encourage me to get outside more than I did. I thought running through Disneyland would be fun since I’m a huge Disney fan.
In running these races and donating and paying the entrance fees I have become a direct participant in my local community. Disneyland’s races benefit the Anaheim community and youth programs. The Make-a-Wish race benefits my local organization of Make-a-Wish. Marathons, half marathons, 10ks, and 5ks are extremely easy ways to get involved in your local philanthropies and charities while meeting people in your community and staying fit!
I never have liked running and I still don’t love it, but reaching a new mile makes me feel so empowered and being able to contribute to my community allows me to actively participate in bettering the world around me. I’ve been training with my mom for months now and it takes time but it is all worth it in the end. Marathon organizers make sure every race is a good time and showcases why the cause you’re contributing to is so important.
Hearing inspiring stories on race day while getting your adrenaline pumping for a race with peers and neighbors who are fired up about a great cause is an amazing and positive environment to be in. If running isn’t your thing, look into volunteering for these events! Getting involved with bettering your community is empowering and an amazing way to get involved.
My name is Meagan Donovan and I’m a 19 year old junior at Chapman University in Southern California. I am double majoring in theater studies and public relations/advertising, emphasizing my studies in the entertainment industry. A fun fact about me is that I’ve been performing since I was in third grade and I love writing my own songs, playing guitar, learning new dance forms, and acting in plays and musicals.
