You Can't Pour From an Empty Cup

August 20, 2017

There are many components to leading a healthy lifestyle that may not immediately come to mind. Today I'm going to share a few factors to consider regarding the lifestyle you want to lead.

Never accept less than you deserve, in any area of your life.

Too often, in my own life, I see so many people accept less than they deserve. In my opinion, the first step to leading a healthy lifestyle is to evaluate the main aspects that make up your life, and do a little self-check-in. Ask yourself, "Am I accepting less than I deserve?" and plug it into all the main aspects of your life. Your relationships, your career, your diet... the list goes on. Let's take relationships as an example. Ask yourself, are the main relationships in your life healthy for you? Do the people you constantly surround yourself with build you up or tear you down? Do you feel good about yourself when you're with them? After you evaluate your relationships, check in with the other parts of your life.

You can't pour from an empty cup...
Leading a healthy lifestyle starts with how you treat yourself. Self-care holds different meanings to different people. When I think of self-care, I think about how I treat myself. I want to treat myself just as I would want other people to treat me- with respect. Where do I start when it comes to taking care of myself? By making sure I am taking care of myself physically, emotionally, and mentally. For now, I'll share how I approach taking care of myself physically, and my relationship with food. Physically I like to make sure I am treating my body and health in the same way I would want my loved ones to care for themselves.

Having a healthy relationship with food is always a work in progress for me. I've come to the conclusion that it's all about balance. If I feel like eating junk food, I have no problem doing so, as long as I do it in moderation. I don't deny myself any food group, but I also try not to overindulge. It's all about balance! I also constantly remind myself that I am the one who is in control of what I choose to consume. Such a simple concept, but it really helped me. I've had episodes in my life where I would completely binge eat, and would feel completely out of control. One day I had a revelation-- I am the one who decides what I eat and how much I eat. I may feel like I need to eat five cookies, but I am the one who ultimately decides that-- not the cookies. The food doesn't have the control, I do. This mindset can pave the way for a healthy lifestyle.

Take control of all the smaller areas that make up the bigger picture of your life, and you'll see your lifestyle take a positive turn.
