I’m totally loving this interview series! Today, I’m featuring 25-year-old Asha Thomas, a blogger, nonprofit worker, and self-care advocate with the goal to unify us all.
AM: What’s your definition of a millennial?
AT: Millennials? We are the young people that don’t let our age define us. We understand that our voices can be heard in many different ways- through megaphones and art, Facebook shares and likes. We are connected, collaborative, and creative.
AM: How are you defying the millennial stereotype?
AT: I’m making connections and helping others with my blog, adventureswithasha.com. I’m not just writing to share my own thoughts; I’m writing to share positivity and inspiration with other people in hopes of creating an online community that is accepting, encouraging, and open. I like to think that, instead of always just being about me, I’m creating a group of “we.”
AM: Why do you think the stereotype is so rampant?
AT: I think the idea of the “selfish millennial” comes from the growth of social media. Millennials are the first generation to have grown up alongside technology that is literally created to connect us instantly. It’s a whole new world- a world where we have the ability to post just about every aspect of our lives at any time. As millennials, we tend to be obsessed with it, and that’s an obsession that our elders just can’t relate to.
AM: What can other young people do to defy this misnomer?
AT: I think that by changing the tone of how we communicate to other people online, we can start to show the world that millennials do value community. The more we can support one another and turn the online world into a positive space, the more we can show the world that millennials don’t just care about themselves.
AM: What do you want the public to know about millennials?
AT: Don’t count us out! The more you learn about millennials, the more connected you can feel to us.
