A Chat with the Founder of Astronobeads

Bea Doheny, full-time student at the University of Missouri and owner of Astronobeads, began her journey by combining her passions of astronomy and art to create her first jewelry piece: the Solar System Bracelet. Over the past year and a half, the student entrepreneur has created nine more pieces, each with their own galactic- themed message. Being a student with a start up company has its ups and downs, but Doheny’s driven and versatile spirit has advanced both her company and future career forward. 



What motivated and inspired you to start Astronobeads?

I have always been curious about astronomy, and I love expressing myself through different art projects. During my senior year of high school at Nerinx Hall, I created my first Solar System wrap bracelet. From there, Astronobeads grew to 10+ space-inspired jewelry pieces. Every product has a special message, and my goal behind my brand is to have more people “Wearing & Sharing the Love of the Cosmos.”


What were the first few steps you took to get your business up and running?

My biggest first steps were asking for help and sending out “shot-in-the-dark” emails to entrepreneurship professors, local website designers and other creatives that I admired. This was a great way to turn the ideas in my head into plans, with my many cups of coffee and like-minded people offering their help.



You're a college student by day and a lady-boss by night. What are some of your best time-management tips for students who are also running a business?

My top time-management tips are:

  1. Do your least favorite thing first. 

  2. Take 3 deep breaths and get started! 

  3. Use Pomodoro technique for focus. 


Looking back, is there anything you would have done differently during those early stages?

I had a hard time answering this question because I couldn’t imagine changing anything. Astronobeads has been evolving with organic growth. I believe these beads are connecting so many dots and bringing the world together.



Early on in your business you were getting orders from all over the world. How did you initially start to get the word out about your brand?

Astronobeads’ international success comes from generating “buzz” on social media. My most successful sites are Reddit, Facebook and my Instagram campaign, “Where in the world is #Astronobeads?”


How do you go about getting big name influencers to wear and promote your product?

Shot-in-the-dark emails. Since day one, sending out shot-in-the-dark emails has continuously launched Astronobeads to the next level. A shot-in-the-dark is clicking “send” and never knowing if the other side will reply. For me, it led to reaching so many phenomenal individuals who wear and promote my product. I believe hitting that “send” button can take you to so many new possibilities.
