Three Secrets to Achieving What you Want

So many of us start the New Year with good intentions to change something. Whether it’s getting fitter, finding a more meaningful job or finally heading off to travel the world. We buy the new trainers, update LinkedIn and start saving money, but for the majority of us those good intentions quickly fade into a distant memory.

 

Do you know 12 January is known as “quitters day”? According to researchers it’s the day that we are most likely to ditch our good intentions as our motivation and resolve starts to waiver. We convince ourselves it’s OK to skip the gym just this once, decide that the current job isn’t so bad or that taking a packed lunch in to save money is too much hassle. Before we know it we’re back to our old habits and the ‘’New You, New Year’’ is just a pipe dream – until next January when it starts all over again.

 

Making changes shouldn’t be reserved for the first eleven days of January, we can decide to step up at any point in the year. It might be something small that you are going to do this month, or more big picture – like where do you want to be in 5 years time?

 

Whatever it is - here’s the thing - you have to develop some regular habits to get you there. This stuff doesn’t just happen.  We all have the same amount of hours in the day so why do some achieve more than others? I work with entrepreneurs and innovators and I’ve noticed that they all have some practices in common that help them go on to achieve great things.

 

 

 

The first thing is time - they all schedule time to focus and to think about what they want to achieve and how they are going to get there. It's not accidental time while waiting in line it’s deliberate time. They switch off all their devices and dedicate regular chunks of time for proper thinking.

 

Resilience - they have grit. They take the knockbacks and brush themselves off and keep going. They ask for feedback from customers and colleagues and, most importantly, take it on board. They see what others would call ‘failure’ as a genuine way to learn and improve. Quitters day doesn’t exist for these guys.

 

Support - they are surrounded by a network of friends, colleagues and family whom they are not afraid to ask for help. These people cheer them on when it’s good and pick them up when the going gets tough. They also seek out coaches and mentors to help them with specific challenges because they know that they don’t have all the answers on their own.

 

So whether you’re an entrepreneur or a wannabe entrepreneur, wanting to do better in your job or seeking the next move, saving to settle down or to travel the world, my advice is to dedicate regular time to think about what you want, reframe knockbacks (and there will be many) as learning and surround yourself with your tribe that will support you when you need them.
