Must-Watch TED Talks

February 21, 2018

Throughout my college experience, I have had the opportunity to watch a variety of interesting TED talks. Whether they were part of a lecture or simply in my own person time, I found them to not only be informative, but inspiring as well.

New ideas, experiences, and advice can come from anywhere. This is why I think the idea behind this organization is great, as it presents an opportunity for ordinary people to have a chance to publicly speak their minds.

One of my favorite talks was given by the Christian artist Rapper Lecrae. In “Heroes and Villains: Is hip-hop a cancer or a cure?” he discusses the background of hip-hop culture and the bad connotation that comes along with it. I feel that this was a very important talk given by someone who has been right in the middle of the issue himself.

One of my role models, model Iskra Lawrence, gave another talk called: “Ending the pursuit of perfection.” In her talk, she discusses how she came to love her body and she shares her insights on how we can learn to do the same. I have looked up to Iskra Lawrence for several years, and I actually had the incredible opportunity to meet her.

Another TED talk that made large impact on how I live my life was given by Dr. Cal Newport. He gave a great talk about why we should quit social media. Right after I watched this video for the first time, I actually did go and delete all of my social media accounts. I deleted all the social media applications from my cell phone, and I can truly say that I am a much happier person because of it.

I highly recommend checking out all of these great talks, as they are free and available anywhere you have wifi connection. I have learned a lot of interesting information from these talks, and I feel as though other people will learn from them as well.

My name is Anne Demarest. I am 21 years old and a senior at Mercyhurst University in Erie, Pa. My major is Fashion Merchandising, and I am currently finishing up a minor in Communications.
