March Recap

April 2, 2018

March 2018 was filled with a lot of historical events, from the world renowned physicist Stephen Hawking passing to students around the world stepping up against gun violence. In March, we saw millions of people come together through tough times, as well as tuning into the Academy Awards to celebrate artists for their hard work.

  • March 2nd: The first of five packaged bombs in the greater Austin and San Antonio area exploded. These 5 bombs were all exploded between March 2nd March 20th. The suspect, 23-year-old Mark Anthony Conditt, used the last device he had to blow himself up after he was pulled over by the police.

  • March 4th: The 90th annual Academy Awards were held, and one of the winners was Jordan Peele, the first black screenwriter to win an Oscar for the best original screenplay for his film, Get Out.


  • March 8th: International Women’s Day was celebrated around the world, which included the McDonalds fast food chain flipping their famous golden arches upside down.

  • March 9th: The Pyeongchang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games had its opening ceremony.

  • March 12th: Hubert de Givenchy, a fashion designer and creator of Givenchy, died at the age of 91.

  • March 13th: Stephen Hawking, a world-renowned physicist, died at the age of 76.

  • March 13th: 7,000 pairs of shoes were lined up on the lawn of Capitol Hill, which represented all of the children killed by gun violence since the Sandy Hook school shooting in 2012.


  • March 14th: One month after the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School mass shooting in Parkland, Florida, students across the nation took part in organized walkouts to protest gun violence and demand action from elected officials.

  • March 15th: A newly built pedestrian bridge collapsed onto a highway at a college in the Miami area.

  • March 20th: Sudan, the world’s last male Northern White Rhino died after age-related complications.

  • March 24th: March for Our Lives took place globally to demand an end to the epidemic of mass shootings.


Allanah Taylor is a 21-year-old communications student who is an avid lover of fashion, journalism, photography and travel. A fun fact about Allanah is that she is Welsh but has grown up in Canada and the U.S. for the majority of her life.
