Classic and Creative Waffle Recipes

Most folks love waffles. The question is, how many have experienced their full capacity of deliciousness? Here is a list of seven creative ways you can enjoy waffles, whether you eat them thawed from the freezer or hot off the griddle.

Classic Reinvented.


Anyone who’s had waffles has probably paired them with maple syrup and butter. For a twist (or if you’re in a pinch and ran out of syrup), experiment with jam, cream cheese, peanut butter, marshmallow fluff, or Nutella. Any combination will be delicious, no matter how zany. But cream cheese and raspberry jam is a winning duo you should try at least once.


Egg Up.


Pair your waffles with eggs for the ultimate breakfast powerhouse on the go. Just scramble up a few eggs, spoon into the center of your waffle, and melt an abundance of cheese on top. You can jazz up the flavors with a sprinkle of minced spring onion and hot sauce.

Or, for a more sophisticated take, make waffles a la Florentine, with hollandaise sauce over poached or easy-over eggs on a bed of sautéed spinach.


Breakfast Fusion.


Take a parfait and a waffle, mix them together, and what do you get? A waffle-parfait-hybrid, of course. This idea is perfect for a Tupperware snack that’s easy to assemble. Pack your ingredients separately. When you’re ready to eat, layer your favorite yoghurt and fruit over cold waffles and sprinkle with granola. Thick Greek yoghurt is ideal since it will hold everything together better than regular, runnier varieties might.


Be Savory.


Just because it’s a stereotype doesn’t mean waffles must always be sweet. You can also swap them out for bread in grilled cheese sandwiches. Ham and cheddar are a go-to combination that can be dipped in spicy mustard and topped with peppery arugula.


Waffle Nachos.


Waffles aren’t just for breakfast. They can be movie night snacks and party pleasers, too. Cut up waffles into scoop-sized wedges. And layer. There are no rules here. Use easy-over eggs, avocado, diced tomato, melted cheese, and jalapenos for breakfast-inspired nachos. Or, get imaginative and pair fried chicken with sweet, tangy BBQ sauce, bacon crumbs, and melted cheese. It’s a versatile concept that suits almost any occasion.


Pizza Waffles.


Think bagel pizza, but juicier and with more nooks for cheese to ooze into. Homemade sauce and fresh mozzarella with pepperoni is a hard medley to beat. But, for the ultimate quick bite, you can use jarred sauce and the toppings of your choice (or convenience). Be moderate in your sauce and generous in your cheese. Five minutes in the broiler, or until the cheese is melty, should do the trick.


Brie Bold.


One of the more exotic pairings out there, brie cheese and fruit with waffles aren’t to be overlooked. Skewer squares of waffle, cubes of brie cheese, and strawberry (or pear) chunks on toothpicks, and drizzle in maple syrup. Tangy, sweet, creamy, and salty, these little bombs will be star of your next party if you can resist nibbling long enough for your guests to arrive.
