Let’s Get Real... It's Hard to Get Out of Bed and Go To Work

We live in a society in which — sadly — a lot of us do not enjoy or even like our jobs. We work because we have to; because we have bills to pay and sometimes — if there is enough money at the end of the month — fun places to go to. Having a job is a huge necessity so many of us cannot avoid. And, even though we search non-stop, most times (at least for a while) we have to settle for a job we do not like...that is when getting out of bed in the morning might become a really hard thing to do.

*Disclaimer: do not worry! This article will not discourage you. It is written for you to see you are not alone and maybe find a little motivation.*

My alarm goes off at 6:10 am and every day I wish I could hit the snooze button and go back to sleep. I work at a daycare Monday to Friday from 7 am to 4 pm and — even though I love my kids to death — I do not enjoy my job. When I first got it, I was so excited and told everyone how much I loved my job. But as the months went by, I started to realize it was not challenging me at all and it was far from my editorial career goal. That began to make it harder for me to get out of bed.

I started telling my girlfriend about my feelings knowing she would understand. You see, just like so many of us, my girlfriend has her own issues with her job. It made it reasonable to see and know that I was not alone. That I was not the only one who dreaded the alarm. Or who counted down the hours until I could clock out. Because when you are feeling down, it helps to know someone understands

So your alarm goes off and you keep your eyes shut pretending you do not have to get up. Pretending you have no bills to pay or groceries to buy or rent due at the beginning of the month. Your body wants to lay still and become one with the sheets. I really drew the exact picture of your mornings, did I not? I told you, you are not alone. But here is the thing: you do it anyways! You do not like your job but you still get out of bed and work these long hours every day.

My advice to you — if you want it — is divided in two. First, keep applying to every job you see that will help you get closer to your career goal or keep you happier and pay the bills. Second, make a list of all the things that make it worth it getting out of bed and spending a couple of miserable hours at work. By doing these things, you are motivating your brain — and yourself — to stay as positive as possible.

Do not put yourself down if you find yourself feeling this way; I promise it is very normal. For some reason, society does not let us talk about this struggle yet so many of us go through it. Do not be afraid to reach out if you need help or just want someone to help you get out of bed. Remind yourself that one day you will wake up to that annoying alarm and you will get ready to go do the job of your dreams. Things will definitely fall into place; you just have to make it through a few rough mornings.

I say all this as I wake up every morning and remind myself I go to work to one day become an amazing editor, to spoil my girlfriend and our cats, and to go on wonderful trips. You’ve got this, go to work!
